Alfred Fowler (1868-1940), British astronomer. Fowler specialised in spectroscopy, using the technique to study sunspots and finding that their temperature was cooler than that of the surrounding surface of the Sun. His awards include the Gold Medal (1915), the highest award of the Royal Astronomical Society; the Royal Medal (1918) from the Royal Society; the Henry Draper Medal (1920) from the US National Academy of Sciences, for contributions to astrophysics; and the Bruce Medal (1934) for lifetime contributions to astronomy. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
