Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840-1914), US admiral and naval historian. Mahan served as a naval officer in the US Civil War. He did not have a distinguished career, attaining the rank of captain by 1885 and then being appointed a lecturer at the Naval War College, but his writings and studies on sea power brought him a reputation as an influential naval historian. Several US Navy ships and institutions have been named in his honour. Photographed circa 1904.
