Le Petit Journal Illustrated Supplement (07-01-17): Back cover showing WW1 French patriotism in Alsace during Fete des Rois

An engraving depicting the Fete des Rois being celebrated in Alsace-Lorraine during WW1 by a gathering of locals and a French army captain. The French had planned to reclaim Alsace-Lorraine from the Germans, having lost it in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian War. Alsatians themselves had been increasingly alienated from the German Empire following The Zabern Affair of 1913, and aggressive 'Germanification' of the region in 1915.
