When Brunel's Great Western Railway Station was built in 1840 it stood on open land. Lord Manvers had earlier made precise directions in the Great Western Railways Act of 1835 about what access should be provided. In accordance with the legislation two streets were laid out: Manvers Street running north to join up with Pierrepont Street and, at right angles, Dorchester Street leading to the Old Bridge.
