Portrait of Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873), a founder of modern geology who proposed the Devonian and Cambrian (Cambrian Explosion) geologic periods. Though a mentor to young Charles Darwin, Sedgwick opposed the materialist nature of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.
