Albert Square, Manchester, England. Watercolour painted 1896 by a founder member of the English Lake Artists Society, May Chatteris Fisher (1874-1910), who married the landscape painter William Smallwood Winder in 1904.

This is a high resolution scan of an original signed watercolour by the Victorian / Edwardian artist, May Chatteris Fisher (1874-1910). It is dated 1896 and depicts a view across Albert Square in Manchester in north west England. The Square, a large public open space in the city centre, was created in the 1860s to house a monument to Queen Victoria's Consort, Prince Albert. The marble statue, one of several standing in Albert Square, is of English banker and Manchester philanthropist Oliver Heywood (1825-1892) and is by the Irish sculptor Albert Bruce-Joy (1824-1924). It bears an inscription recording that Heywood’s life was “devoted to the public good”. The statue was unveiled in December 1894, less than two years before the young May Chatteris Fisher, then aged about 22, painted this picture. May was born near Manchester and, after studying at the Manchester Municipal School of Art, became an accomplished artist, children's book illustrator and bookplate designer. In 1901 and 1904, she illustrated two books of children’s fairy tales for the publishers Sherratt & Hughes: ‘Ignoramus’ by E. Todd and ‘Pixie’ by Frances Reddaway. In 1902, her works were praised in a survey, published in New York, of female bookplate designers on both sides of the Atlantic. In 1904, May married the established landscape painter, William Smallwood Winder (1869-1910), and subsequently signed her work MC Winder. Both May and William were founder members of the English Lake Artists Society.
