A bronze statue of wartime Norwegian resistance hero Gunnar Sønsteby beside his bicycle Facing part of Oslo University on Karl Johns gate in downtown Oslo, Norway. A historic photo taken of Gunnar Sønsteby and his bike was taken on the exact spot where he witnessed on 9th April 1940 German soldiers march through Oslo after invading Norway. That was when the mild-mannered young Sønsteby decided to launch into resistance efforts during the German occupation of World War II. He went on to become one of Norway’s wartime heroes, for his myriad sabotage operations that frustrated the Nazi German forces until their surrender five years later. Gunnar Sønsteby died in May 2012 at the age of 94.
