Photograph of Ely Cathedral Cambridgeshire Ely was one of the last Saxon strongholds protected by it s marshy isolation and the fearsome warrior Hereward The Wake Oliver Cromwell also resided in Ely before leading the Ironsides in the English Civil War His house is also a prominent tourist attraction in this small Cathedral city. In 2009 Ely Cathedral celebrated it's 900th anniversary.
