Hoodia gordonii taken near Rosh Pinah, Namibia
A spiny succulent grows in the north eastern part of the Western Cape, the north and northwestern regions of the Northern Cape up into southern Namibia. It has large fleshy coloured flowers that smell of rotten meat attracting flies to pollinate them (myophily). The stems of the plant can be eaten raw once the spines have been removed and are used as an appetite suppressant. The product is becoming increasingly popular in the Western world as a diet aid.
