A large plant for the distillation of beets isshown in the Section Fig. 58. The beets fromthe beet silos are carried to suitable washingmachines. A, see Chapter VII, in which they arethoroughly cleaned of dirt and gravel. From thewashers they are lifted by a conveyor 5 to adistributor C by which they are conveyed to thecutters or sheers. These consist of horizontalapertured plates revolving at a high speed, andcarry knives which plane off slices from the drop through the apertures of the plate andare conveyed to the diffusion batteries, as by amovable chute D oscillated with a jigging motionthrough suitable gearing. The diffusers F should be arranged so thatsmall trucks may be driven beneath them toreceive the spent slices and carry them to thespent beet silos. From the distilling column K the phlegm orraw spirit passes to the phlegm tank L fromwhich it is drawn as desired into the rectifyingcolumn M, thence into the coolers and condensersand thence into the alcohol tanks A^. On the other side of the building as indicatedby the chimney is the boiler for generating themotive power for the plant and for supplying thesteam necessary for the distilling and rectifyingcolumns and the hot water for the diffusion bat-teries.
