Orion nebula. Infrared image of a colony of hot young stars within the Orion Nebula. The Orion Nebula, or Messier 42 (M42), is a diffuse nebula situated south of Orion's Belt. It lies about 1350 light-years from Earth. The hottest stars in the region are the Trapezium cluster (bright spots, centre right). Radiation and winds from these stars have sculpted and blown away surrounding dust. Imaged by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope.
