Cleansing Teeth.—The first thing to do, in allcases, is to put the teeth in as first-class condition as 6 THE TIGHTENING OF LOOSE TEETH possible, and to remove tartar, in order to jn-eventloosening or to tighten loosened teeth. According to some authors, loosening is caused onlyby tartar, the removal of which constitutes the soleand sufficient treatment; but cases not uncommonlyoccur where teeth have become loose without showingany calcareous deposits, though tartar may havepassed through the softened gum prior to the loosen-ing of the teeth. Besides, loosened teeth are instinctively relievedfrom contact with their antagonists, and are not care-. Fig. 2 <r fully cleansed ; on them, of course, tartar may easilybe deposited. Finally, there are often present large calcareousdeposits when looseness cannot be said to , there are cases without any predisposition toloosening, such as those resulting from constitu-tional diseases, dystrophia, and great strain. Cleansing should be done as carefully as possible. There is one point which I wish to bring out all operators remove tartar by pushing the TIGHTENING LOOSE TEETH 7 instrument downwards, thus causing pain, withoutsucceeding in removing hard calcareous deposits. Inorganic and organic acids are to be used—viz.,sulphuric and hydrochloric, formic, lactic, and tri-chloracetic. When acting for some minutes, acids cause decal-cification or dulness of the enamel. Influenced by this fact, I endeavoured to dissolvethe tartar b} prolonged action of a harmless drugcapable of dissolving tartar. A chemist,
