Solar cell manufacture. A finished solar cell is tested at the solar cell manufacturing plant of Photowatt, in Caen, Normandy. Solar cells are wafers of single-crystal silicon which have been doped with impurities that enable them to convert sunlight into electric current. This current is picked up and transmitted by the grid of fine wires which covers the cell's surface.
