The Coffee family is an exceedingly large one, comprising about400 genera with over 5500 species, which occur mainly in the tropicsand sub-tropical regions. Of introduced genera only a few areworth mentioning. Two species of Coffee are under cultivation asCoffea arabica L. and Coffea liberica Bull., the latter growing wildas an escape from cultivation in the mountains back of Honolulu,the former is cultivated extensively in Kona, Hawaii. Ornamental species are Rondeletia odorata Jacq., a native of Plate Ixora macrothyrsa Theijsm. et Rubiaceae. 201 Cuba and Mexico. Specimens may be seen in Mrs. M. E. Fosterspremises, in the grounds of the Central Grammar School, and else-where. It resembles a small Ixora with small rugose leaves, theflowers are more of an orange-red. Gardenia florida L., the fragrantwhite Gardenia, is commonly cultivated. The flowers are usuallydouble. It is a native of China and Japan, but is now widelyplanted. A little over a year ago the writer introduced a fewplants of the exceedingly handsome Mussaenda erythrophylla Thon. from Singapore. It is a native of the Congo and the WestCoast of Africa, and is considered one of the finest ornamentalplants. It is in flower practically all the year round, and is con-spicuous on account of the large, ovate bracts, which are of a deepcarmine red. It is easily grown from cuttings.
