Ap-parently this did not please the crafty Venetians, who were perhapsendeavoring, in the midst of the dispute between the two empires,to free themselves from both, and become independent. At allevents, the appearance of a Byzantine fleet in their waters gave theupper hand for a time to the party which preferred to serve theremote and powerhss emperor of the East, rather than the mightyruler of the Franks and his son Pepin, who was so inconvenientlynear. But Pepins successes in arms outweighed the advantage.
