Illustration showing prostatitis, the inflammation of the prostate gland. The prostate is a male sex gland which surrounds the urethra just below the bladder and secretes an alkaline fluid which forms part of the semen. Prostatitis is usually due to bacterial infection and causes painful and frequent passing of urine. The large, pale area is the prostate gland and the vertical tube, into which the secretory ducts empty, is the urethra. The duct which joins the urethra within the prostate is one of two paired ejeculatory ducts which carry semen from the testicles during ejeculation. The rectum is seen at bottom right.
