In the thirteenth century various alterations were intro-duced in the construction of Cistercian churches. Thus aisleswere often added to the choir, as was also in some cases aneastern Apse., with radiating chapels. In the aisles of thetransepts the partition walls separating their chapels weredispensed with, and the chapels thrown open. Lofty stonetowers were erected, as at Fountains and Iurness. In Scotlandthey frequently ended in a saddle-back roof, with crow-stepgables, as at Sweet Heart or New Abbey, in Dumfriesshire. The erection of IJahnerino Abbey must liave been com-mencetl soon after the year V225, but we have no detailsrejrardinij the buildin- either of its church or of its otherstructures. It would not be dedicated till its completion, whichwas })robably not effecled till many years after its connnence-nieut. Arbroath Abbey was not dedicated till lifty-live yearsafter it was founded. The church of St. Andrews Priory,which was also the Cathedral church, is known not to have beenfinished till 158 years after it was begun.
