Unique Maw's tiles designed and made specially for the staircase of the Best Western Valley Hotel in Ironbridege, Shropshire

This example of Victorian tiling is in the Best Western Valley Hotel in Ironbridge, Shropshire. In the 1870s the hotel (then called Severn House) was occupied by Arthur Maw, a celebrated tile maker at nearby Jackfield. There he had a factory employing some 140 men and 40 women. His company's tiles enjoyed a worldwide reputation. The tiles on this staircase were made specifically for this job and were installed about 1890 by Robert Henry Clarke who worked for Maw. once the job was finished the moulds were destroyed thus making this satircase truely unique.
