Nuchal cord complication. Computer artwork of a foetus in the womb with its umbilical cord wrapped around its neck. This is known as a nuchal cord complication and occurs in 20 per cent of pregnancies. No action is usually taken to correct the complication, as although it may cause a longer labour and lead to foetal heart rate anomalies during birth, it is rarely fatal.
