Close-up of a Yellow Crowned Night Heron feeding on a crab, just caught in a lagoon along Fort Myers Beach in Florida USA.

Yellow-crowned Night Heron found extensively in Florida and in the Everglades of Southern Florida. They are very similar to the more secretive Black-crowned Night Heron with the exception of the blackish back of the Black-crowned heron and the black Herons usually are seen hunched and very inactive but fly to feed at dusk. The eyes are distinctively red in colour and have stout bills. This species is more finely speckled than the the Black-crowned heron and the bill is stouter and with much longer legs and yellow in colour.
