Many other pieces of wood havebeen collected which illustrate variouspoints of interest. One has a squarehole showing marks of a gouge; anotherhas a similar hole, but indicates that itwas cut out by a straight-edged imple-ment like a small hatchet; while athird, being part of the round tenon ofa prepared beam splintered off, containsa number of small holes with woodenpins, showing how it had been mended. 4. Canoes, Paddles, etc.—At thecommencement of our explorations, asalready mentioned, a canoe, hollowedout of a single oak trunk, was foundabout 100 yards north of the depth in the moss was well ascer-tained, owing to the fact that, thoughlying at the bottom of one of the originaldrains, it presented no obstruction tothe flow of water, and consequently wasthen undisturbed.
