Presumably itis the Emperor Maximinius, though, while his right handgrasps a sword, he holds in his left a blaek orb, sur-mounted by a cross. lie is attired in a bluish-green robewith a broad white collar and a broad border of whiteat the bottom of the skirt. The throne is set beneath ared canopy in a Gothic interior, which includes an archedentrance and a mullioned window. The subject possiblydepicts the fate of S. The fig-ures, supplied by Brueghel, include a woman and childapproaching by the pathway, on the right, a group thatis composed in the foreground. The center is occupiedby a woman in red cloak and blue skirt, accompaniedby a spaniel. She stands near an ass, laden with pan-niers, in each of which is a baby. On the right are dis-posed a man, a child and two women, one of the lat-ter being engaged in washin
