Illustration of a cytochrome (green) variant that has been engineered to bind cobalt ions (red spheres) over the usual copper ions. This has resulted in the formation of a dimer, a molecule formed from two identical subunits. Cytochrome molecules perform oxidation and reduction reactions for electron transport, a chain of reactions used to power cellular processes that require energy. Proteins designed to bind different metals could be used selective metal sequestration agents.
