Merovingian buckles, dating from the 7th century, before and after restoration. The Merovingians were a dynasty that ruled the Franks in the area that is now modern-day France, during the 5th to 8th centuries. These buckles were completely covered with a corrosion product, and were X-rayed to discover what metals they were made from. They were then placed in a sodium sulphate solution to halt the corrosion, and then restored using micro-engraving tools and polishing tools. Photographed in France.
