The blood corpuscles are of twokinds, the white and the red. The white corpuscles, astheir name indicates, are without color. They are spher- ri11: blood. 95 ical bodies, averaging aboul 2^{) of an inch in diame-ter. They are a trifle larger than the red corpuscles, but not so abundant, tlie average number being one whitecorpuscle to about three hundred red, although this issubject to variation even in health. The white corpus-cles are capable of changing their form by a flow oftheir substance in various directions. This is after themanner of the amoeba, as illustrated in Pig. 2 ; hencethe changes in their shape are called the amoeboidmovements. The white corpuscles are identical withthe lymph corpuscles. When, in cases of illness, theperson becomes weak and pale, there is generally anincrease in the number of the white corpuscles, and adecrease of the red. The red corpuscles of human blood are circular bodies, FIG. 23. FIG. 24. I. Fig. 23. Human blood, highly magnified : (a) the white corpuscles ;(n) the red corpuscles. Fig. 24. Fig. 23 shows anumber of these bodies, shaded in the center to givethe correct impression that they are concave. One cor-puscle, at the left of the figure, is seen on the edge, 96 THE ESSENTIALS OF HEALTH. showing that it is biconcave, or slightly hollowed oneither side. The red corpuscles exist in vast is estimated that in a minute drop of blood there areover five millions of them ; while in a medium-sizedperson there are not less than twenty-five billions,— too vast a number for the mind to 24 represents a iew red corpuscles and one whitecorpuscle, very highly magnified. Four red corpusclesare seen resting on the side, while four are on theedge
