Carrier crab (Lamoha personata). This crab is found throughout the deep abyssal seas of Polynesia at a depth of 450-2000 metres, and is one of a number of species of crab whose upper shell (carapace) resembles a face. Carrier crabs (family Homolidae) are primitive crabs, and have their sexual orifices at the base of their legs on the under side, whereas the more advanced crabs have these sexual orifices under the breastplate. The carapace of this specimen measures 5cm wide.
