Common Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) growing in the wall of a Romanic church, Aran valley, Pyrenees, Spain

Widely distributed plant, being found all over Europe and in temperate Asia as far as the Himalayas, and in North America it is exceedingly abundant. Great Mullein is found growing on hedge-banks, by roadsides and on waste ground, more especially on gravel, sand or chalk. Sunny positions in uncultivated fields and especially on dry soils. It was originally used to encourage healthy digestion and wound healing, but is now commonly used to support healthy respiratory function. In addition, Mullein Leaf has naturally occurring astringent and soothing compounds that have made it popular in soothing inner ear aches. Contains Coumarin which was banned by the FDA as a food additive in 1940, due to studies showing liver toxicity. There is also some evidence that it may be carcinogenic. The seeds contain rotenone which is an insecticide and fish poison.
