Vintage portrait painting of American statesman, diplomat and lawyer John Jay (1745 - 1829) - the first US Chief Justice (1789 - 1795). Jay was a prominent political figure during the American Revolution and President of the Second Continental Congress from 1778 to 1779. He also served as US Minister to Spain (1779 - 1782), helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris (1783) which ended the Revolutionary War and was US Secretary of Foreign Affairs from 1784 to 1790.
