Illustration of the translocase of the outer membrane (TOM) protein complex from the outer membrane of mitochondria. This complex is the main importer of proteins into mitochondria. Its receptor proteins recognise the proteins for import and bind to them. They pass through the complex's channel in the outer membrane and are then passed to translocase of the inner membrane (TIM) proteins for transport into the matrix mitochondrion.
