Thissection, with twenty-eight per cent, of itslength consisting of tunnels and a gradeof to per cent, for twenty-fivemiles, was chosen for an experiment be-cause of its enormous traffic with Italy,which caused large consumption of coalwith resulting smoke in the tunnels. The sections Bellinzona-Chiasso andErstfeld-Lucerne are expected to followin 1921 and the consulting experts havefound that the big power stations atAmsteg and Riton, the first yielding26,000 horsepower and the latter 32,000horsepower, will also suffice for thesehues, even if the traffic should increasesome sixty to seventy per cent. Anotherseries of plants yielding 70,000 horse-power is planned for eastern and centralSwitzerland. The cost of electrification of the Erst-feld-
