Louis Daguerre (1787-1851), inventor of the first practical system of photography. Since 1821 he had been researching means of obtaining permanently the images produced with the camera obscura. In 1829 he formed a partnership with Nicéphore Niépce, a leader in photochemistry, who had been working on the same problem. Daguerre wrote to Niépce in 1831 suggesting the use of iodized silver plates following his discovery of the image of itself that a silver spoon lying on an iodized plate had produced. He also found that the non-visible image on the silver plate could be made visible as a positive image by exposure to mercury vapour fumes, giving rise to the concept of the latent further development the Daguerreotype process was introduced in 1839.
