Hankau, Wuchangand Han Yang are three cities, separat-ed by the Yangtse and Han rivers, aboutsix hundred miles from cities might be one city but forthe rivers, and they are the Chicago ofChina. Here the China Inland Mission- The three cities have a population ofabout 300,000. We cross the Yangtse from Hankauto Wuchang, pass through the city andout at the south gate, then south for afew miles, when we come to the tem-ple gate in connection with the Pago-da of Wu Chang. As we enter the gatefour huge, hideous statues of soldiersor guardians of the temple, as they are 500 called, are seen, two on either side ofthe gatehouse. These seem to be com-mon to all temples of importance. In-side we pass between two hideous, ill-carved stone lions.
