Beyond the roofs of tiles, here and there stood up the mas-sive towers of Goths and Romans, rich-hued and time-defying; cooland dark rose the near Sierra, with its terraced gardens, its hermi-tages, and its vales paraisos (or vales of paradise); while clear-cutagainst the distant sky stood out the castle of Almodoxar, eight milesaway. Beneath us lay the court of oranges, the grand entrance-plaza tothe mosque, its ranks of orange-trees so planned as to be a continuationof the lines of columns within the temple, and its fountain to refreshall true believers. A few palms rise above the orange-trees, but theyare wind-torn and scraggy ; yet they remind the student of history oftheir introduction here by Abde
