A view from the seafront up a very quiet, relatively car-free Grand Avenue, Hove, Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, England, UK c. 1958. Grand Avenue was designed as the central space of an 1800s development – seafront lawns formed part of the scheme. The 1897 statue of Queen Victoria was erected by to commemorate the 60th anniversary of her reign. The 1874 Princes Hotel, designed by Sir James Knowles is far right. It later became council offices. A view looking north from the seafront (Kingsway runs in the foreground left to right) up a very quiet, relatively car-free Grand Avenue, Hove, Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, England, UK c. 1958. Grand Avenue was designed as the central space of the ambitious development in the 1800s proposed by the West Brighton Estate Company. The seafront lawns formed part of the scheme, and were intended for the use of estate residents. The 1897 statue of Queen Victoria was erected by to commemorate the 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne (however, it was not completed until 1901). Grand Avenue is the broadest street in Hove. The company was generous with the allocation of space. However, in 1900 the company was obliged to admit the project was not a success. Building work at Grand Avenue was sporadic, starting off in 1877 with planning approval for just three houses. The large block of flats on the east side of Grand Avenue was erected in 1939 (No 4 – centre right). The art-deco building was considered one of the best mansion blocks at the time. The building on the far right was the Princes Hotel, designed by architect Sir James Knowles (1831–1908) and it involved two separate terraces known as Queen’s Gardens. The hotel was built in 1874 in an Italianate design using white and yellow bricks. It later became council offices. All of the houses on the west side of Grand Avenue (here left) have since been redeveloped into blocks of flats and the street now looks very different. This image is from an old amateur black and white negative. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
