The soil best suited for beet culture is that which is rather light and well enriched. Sow in drills 1 foot apart and 1 inch deep, as early as the ground can be worked. When the plants are large enough, thin out to stand 6 inches apart in rows; continue sowing for a succession as late as the middle of August. Keep well cultivated. The early varieties mature in 40 to 50 days; the midseason and late varieties require 70 to 100 days. Beets can readily be kept for winter use by packing them in slightly moist earth and storing in a cool cellar. 218. Bolgiano's Extra Early Superb. (40 days.) ("Best in Garden" Variety.) Has taken the lead among early turnip-shaped Beets entirely by superior merits of everything pertaining to a Beet to make a recognized leader. It is very early, indeed; it is 8 to 10 days ahead of any other early sort now offered. The shape is uniformly perfect, being entirely free from, fibrous side roots, which are so ob- jectionable; in fact, it is the smoothest Beet within our knowledge. The flesh is a rich, dark blood-red, tender, crisp, and deliciously sweet, besides having a very small top; is an ideal variety for bunching. Will produce a good crop inside of six weeks from sowing.
