Tata Steel, the owners of Port Talbot steelworks, the UK's largest, announced in January 2016 that around 700 people would lose their jobs as part of cost-cutting measures by the firm. There has been a steelworks at Port Talbot since the original plant was established between 1901-05, and when the 2016 announcement was made around 4000 people were employed at the site.
