Originally founded by Queen Etheldreda in 7 c, the present church was started in 1083 by Abbot Simeon. The Lady Chapel was built 1321 to 1353 by Alan de Walsingham. It is the widest medieval vault in England. Damage is due to deterioration of soft clutch chalk and Lord Protector Somerset's men in 1547.
