Here scattered throughthe bamboo growth were the last outposts of thesilver firs, stunted and ragged, their clipped branchesall pointing in one direction like finger-posts of ex-ceptional unanimity and tedious persistence. In theshade grew livid green orchids and a beautifulNomocharis, both white-flowered and rose; here andthere a break in the bamboo growth revealed opengrassy glades, likewise dappled with flowers.
