Soviet and US astronauts at the Starmus Festival in June 2011, on La Palma in the Canary Islands. From left, those present are: US astronaut William 'Bill' Anders (born 1930, Apollo 8), Soviet cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko (born 1934, Soyuz 7, 24 and 37), US astronaut Neil Armstrong (1930-2012, Gemini 8, Apollo 11), US astronaut James 'Jim' Lovell (born 1928, Apollo 13), and Soviet-Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov (born 1934, Voskhod 2 and Soyuz 19). Armstrong was the first person to walk on the Moon, doing so on 21 July 1969. Leonov performed the first spacewalk during the Voskhod 2 mission on 18 March 1965.
