The variationbetween the two sides is any pathology occurring in the posteriorphrenocostal space cannot be shown on thestandard anteroposterior plates. It is truethat plates made in deep inspiration reducethe depth of this hidden field, but at no timeis the diaphragm entirely -flat. Again, anyinflammatory pathology involving the lowerlobes causes a fixation and elevation of thediaphragm on the affected side, and thedepth of the area under discussion is cor-respondingly increased. The lower right lobe is a favorite localityfor abscess, probably due to the predilec-tion for foreign bodies to enter the rightbronchus. Lateral and Oblique Studies of the Chest 109. Fig. 5. Case hi.
