Admiral John L. Worden was a lieutenant when commanded the Union Monitor in its battle against the Virginia (Merrimack) in 1862.


Admiral John Lorimer Worden served in the Civil War. He was a lieutenant when he held command of the Union Monitor in its battle against the Confederate Virginia (later called Merrimack) in March 1862, the first battle of ironclads. The battle ended in a draw. Worden was wounded in the face and partially blinded by a shell striking near one of the peep holes in the pilot house .This photo shows Worden after he was made Rear Admiral in 1872.
