Illustration of the US neurobiologist and biophysicist Roderick MacKinnon (born 1956). MacKinnon is best known for his work on ion channels, channels in cell membranes that allow selected charged atoms (ions) to pass in and out of a cell. In 1998, working on the potassium channel, he determined the first three dimensional molecular structure of a channel. He went on to discover the mechanisms by which the channel was selective for potassium and opened and closed in response to environmental conditions. MacKinnon shared the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work.
