Family home. Mother with her 1-year-old child and young baby, standing outside her home. It has a corrugated iron roof, mud walls, and a chimney. The chimney takes smoke outside the house, away from the cooking fire. A smoke hood will be used to channel smoke into the chimney. This system is a great improvement over the use of an open wood fire. Open wood fires create a lot of smoke, and this can lead to diseases caused by inhalation of smoke. Photographed in January 2006 in Karombo village, near Kisumu, Kenya. For a house without a chimney, see image P980/091.
