CONCRETE PAVING BETWEEN CAR TRACKS INBIRMINGHAM Concrete pavements between the street railway trackshave been in service in Birmingham, Ala., since April, the concrete was laid directly against both sidesof the T-rails, the pavement alongside is in good three and a half blocks of double track were placedoriginally, but during the last year there have been added6y2 miles of single track, making a total of 7 miles onstreets having ordinary heavy teaming traffic. In the ac-companying drawing the dimensions of the pavement andthe kind of concrete used in the various layers are line dividing the 23^-in. top-coat layer is imaginary be-. Concrete Mixer for Track Work at Birmingham cause it was placed over the slag concrete before fhe latterhad a chance to set. After traffic had been removed to one track, the sub-grade for the other track was excavated, the material re-moved, the track built and concrete material dumped along-side of the trench. Very little rolling was necessary, asgenerally the sub-grade is in stiff red clay. First, the trackwas raised approximately to grade and line and supported on piles of slag or blocks under the ends of ties. A Chicagomixer mounted on a short flat car running on the tracksdeposited concrete under the ties and between them to adepth of about 3 in. above the bottom. When the mixerwas moved along, the track behind it was brought to finalline and grade by shovel-tamping the concrete under theties and allowing it to set for seven days. After the baseconcrete had set the mixer was again run along the track • iCrown i ■60 136Slag Concrete^J 24Stone Concre
