A traveling crane, running thefull length of the building over the fore baj^s, provides for handlingthe heavy rakes used in clearing the racks. From the north side ofeach fore bay the water flows through a bellmouth entrance into asteel penstock, 10 feet in diameter. Each penstock is provided witha gate, a by-pass, and air vent. The water wheels and generators are in a deep pit. Each gener-ator rests at the bottom of an open shaft, 25 feet in diameter, whichdescends to the generator floor at elevation 292. For 18 feet abo\ ethis floor the shaft is enlarged to 30 feet. The generators are of thevertical-shaft type with internal revolving fleld. On top of eachone is a direct-connected exciter. The generators are rated at 27,000kilowatts, continuous maximum output at 90 per cent power factor,at 12,000 volts, 3 phase. 25 cycles per s
