A curious arrangement ^ . ^ of the material of a bed of Y JI, Cone-in- one. aW^- clay, and of clay strata of va- rious agos, often mistaken for some sort of fossil organ- ism. Contradictory explana- tions are given of its origin. It has been often figured; the figure here given is one copied from Dawson's Aca dian Geology.—A similar structure on a grand scale is sometimes seen in coal. Les- ley's Manual of Coal, etc, 1856, page 164, fig. 59, the then ex- posed face of a mine 10 m. N. of the summit of the Nashville and Chat- anoo- ga RR. in Ten- nessee. —See also Owens GeoL,.
