Great Altar, Pergamon, c 180-160 BC. The Great Altar is one of the most remarkable works of Hellenistic art. It was erected during the reign of king Eumenes II (197-159BC) on its own terrace on the acropolis at Pergamon. The altar consisted of a high podium decorated with a colossal frieze, 120m long. The frieze shows the battle between the earth-born Giants and the Olympian gods led by Zeus. The figures are grand, powerful and dynamic, and their hair, clothes and paraphernalia are carved in great detail.
