Aphanochaete. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an epiphytic green algae of the genus Aphanochaete. Coccoid cells of this algae are seen growing as branching filaments attached to a plant. Epiphytes are plants attached to another plant, not growing parasitically upon it but using it for support. Various plants, lichens, mosses and algae act as epiphytes. Species of Aphanochaete are seen acting as epiphytes on both large plants and other algae in freshwater environments.
