Without a doubt the most sensational new plant introduced for many years and one of the most striking flowering ornamental plants we have ever seen. ft is of strong free growth with large dark green leaves from each axil of which, one to two feet long and nearly one inch thick, rope like spikes of velvety crimson flowers are gracefully suspended, as shown in our illustration, which conveys but a faint idea of the beauty and distinct warm coloring of this splendid acquisition; but the remarkable floriferousness and the great size of the of flowers (compared to the plant) is fairly well shown. The plant is in flower the year round and is as easily grown as a Coleus, simply requiring a warm temperature to develop its full beauty. (See cut.) This compact growing variety of the " African Lily," though introduced in 1879, has been but little disseminated, not because its value was not known, but' on account of scarcity We have now succeeded in working up a large stock which enables us offer it at a popular price. It is of dwarfer more compact habit than the type and much freer flowering, even the smallest plants throwing up strong flower spikes, with large umbels of 80 to 50 beautiful dark blue flowers.
