A red-robed Christ enthroned, raising his right hand, is flanked on his right by the Virgin Mary. Also depicted are: Saint Adalbert (956 - 997), Bishop of Prague (top left); and Saint Paul holding a sword and a book (right). Max Švabinský was born in Kromeriz, then a part of Czechoslovakia, and is today considered to be one of the founders of Modernism in Eastern Europe. After graduating from high school in 1891, he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He established his reputation as a print-maker at the turn of the century, with a particular focus on mezzotint, lithography and etching. The Prague Academy offered him a professorship in 1910 and he founded the school’s print department. The same year, he completed his first commissioned murals for the Government’s Municipal House in Prague. He also designed some Czechoslovak banknotes and postage stamps. Švabinský was one of the founders of the Mánes Society of Artists and an important representative of the Hollar Association of Czech Graphic Artists.
